Access Is the Innovation: Funding, Networks, and Opportunity for Women Founders

Tuesday, 28th April from 09:00-10:00

Gróska - Fenjamýri

This panel, presented in partnership with Canada, EntrepreNorth and WomenTechIceland, is about broadening the definition of innovation, making the conversation accessible to non-technical audiences and connecting directly to real constraints women face.

For women founders, opportunity is endless - but access is not. True innovation requires shifting the landscape of funding and networking to be more inclusive. The Embassy of Canada, EntrepreNorth, and WomenTechIceland invite you to a moderated panel framing the lived experiences of women founders across the Arctic. We’ll dive into the inter-industry partnerships available now and identify the gaps we must still bridge to create a truly accessible innovation ecosystem.

Speakers include:

  • Jenny Hill (BA, University of Victoria, 2006; MA, University of Toronto, 2009) joined the Canadian International Development Agency in 2005. Her first assignment abroad was to Afghanistan in 2009; in 2015, she served as first secretary (development) in Ghana; and, in 2017, as head of cooperation in Kenya. At Headquarters, her positions have included deputy director roles in the International Humanitarian Assistance and Global Health bureaus and senior adviser to the assistant deputy minister of the Global Issues and Development Branch. She was Canada’s ambassador to South Sudan from 2020 to late 2021. Most recently, she served as head of office, counsellor and consul in Zambia.

  • Xina Cowan Xina lives and works in Whitehorse, Yukon on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. Her ancestry is Irish, Scottish, and Mohawk. She is the granddaughter of Barbara Monture Malloch and the great-granddaughter of Gilbert ‘Slim’ Monture from Six Nations. As the CEO and Co-Founder of EntrepreNorth’s new charitable entity, Xina leads with a philosophy of empathy and relationality. A natural bridge-builder, Xina views fundraising as an essential act of community-building. Grounded in the vision of Northern Indigenous communities, she works to mobilize funders and partners to co-create the space and resources necessary for long-term resilience. By establishing EntrepreNorth’s independent governance, she is expanding access to the vital tools entrepreneurs need to build businesses that are sustainable for the long term. Xina is also host and producer of the Venture Out podcast, where she amplifies stories of Northern innovation and Indigenous excellence. Xina is a passionate advocate for Indigenous fashion designers and artists across the Circumpolar Arctic, celebrating the intersection of culture and economic wellbeing.

  • Chef Steph Baryluk, a proud Teetl’it Gwich’in from Teetl’it Zheh (Fort McPherson) in Treaty 11 Territory, draws deep inspiration from her Arctic upbringing, where hunting, fishing, and land stewardship shaped her connection to food and cultural heritage. With over 10 years of experience as a Red Seal Indigenous Chef, Steph is passionate about preserving and sharing Indigenous culinary traditions through education, culinary training, and community engagement. Named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2024 and recipient of the WXN Food Industry Award, Chef Steph is a leader in advancing Indigenous food systems. She combines her culinary expertise with advocacy, inspiring future generations and promoting sustainability and cultural heritage from community kitchens to the global stage.

She comes from a long line of strong, vibrant, Indigenous women. Her matriarchs are teachers, healers, bush women, social advocates, and cultural leaders. Through her line of handcrafted soaps, she works to share the talent of her family and community. When she moved to Mayo to live in her grandmother's community on their traditional territory, she envisioned reconnecting with the people of her community, land, and culture. At the core of her business, The Yukon Soap Company is the belief that traditional ways of knowing and being can create abundance, reflecting Dan Ke values. Through Joella’s entrepreneurship and mentorship, she promotes community wellness and supporting people along their journey through cultural programs, small business mentorships, as well as advocating for clean rivers and acts of resilience, opening her heart and mind and contribute her skills and experiences to do the heart work and the hard work.

  • Chaiwe Sól Patiswa Drifudóttir is an Icelandic-Zambian artist, curator, and educator whose work is deeply informed by her experience as a transracial adoptee. Holding a Master’s in Theater Education, she has spent the last five years pioneering a pedagogical method that uses drama as a tool for language acquisition, specifically helping children learn Icelandic as a second language.

By facilitating workshops and performances at the National Theatre, she provides a platform for marginalized voices to share their stories and claim their space in the cultural landscape. Her activism is driven by a personal mission to bridge cultural gaps and foster a more equitable society for herself and her son.

Reimagining Connection in Reykjavik

Most of us spend our mornings rushing or staring at a screen. WomenTechIceland would love to change that, which is why we are launching Breakfast Club Reykjavik this month.

Breakfast Club Reykjavik is a new initiative designed to bring our city's brightest minds together in the cozy corners of our favorite coffee shops. Join us for coffee and a bun, and meet fellow founders, freelancers, and local experts, with no pressure - only good vibes and company.

It’s more than just a meetup; it’s a support system. Our hope is to build a space to create a point of connection, an opportunity to network and a chance to build lasting professional and personal relationships.

If you're interested in sharing at one of the Breakfast Clubs, or have a topic you want to learn more about, let us know!

We take the time to show up for each other, proving that the best way to grow your career is to grow your community.

Everyone is welcome.

As the prominence of AI continues to grow, ensuring its design and usability align with inclusivity becomes increasingly imperative. Notably, AI and LLMs have exhibited inherent biases. In this workshop, we invite students and new graduates to participate in an AI-themed prize task, shedding light on the biases inherent in AI models and exploring avenues for enhancing their utility.

This event is organized by WomenTechIceland in collaboration with ADA, the association of female students in computer science at the University of Iceland, and /sys/tur, the corresponding association at Reykjavík University, and will take place on the University of Iceland campus. The event is sponsored by the EDIH Iceland at the Computer Science Department at Reykjavík University and IHPC at the Computer Science Department at the University of Iceland. The winning solution will receive a prize sponsored by Origo. Registration is free, and we warmly welcome students and recent graduates of all genders to participate.

Attendees will need to bring their own computers to the event but free versions of AI tools will be used.

A prize, sponsored by Origo, will be awarded to the most exemplary solution presented. Food and drinks provided during the event.

22 MAY kl. 13:00 - 16:00 Engjateigur 9, 105 Reykjavík (room is located in the basement of the building)

Ský, Vertonet, and WomenTechIceland hosted this DEIB event. Programming, logic and reasoning have been identified as the fundamental knowledge for the 21st century, not only for computer scientists but for all of us. This fact calls for a more diverse and inclusive group of students in technical studies in order to be able to keep up with the demands of the labor market. The target group of the workshop is those who are interested in how we can strengthen inclusion in the labor market. DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) is the topic and the goal of the workshop is to put together simple steps that today's companies should be able to take to increase well-being in the workplace for everyone.
If you are interested in exploring it with us, we recommend on signing up for the workshop on how we can strengthen inclusion in the labor market (DEIB).

From February to May 2024, WomenTechIceland was proud to partner with RIKK— Institute for Gender, Equality and Difference, for a 4-event panel series on various hot-button issues relating to equality and inclusion. The final discussion took place during Iceland Innovation Week

Each panel will focus on a different aspect of DEIB.

The 3rd panel in the series taking place on 18 April will focus on DEIB Backlash. This event is sponsored by Marel.
